The Province of Värmland is known for its beautiful landscapes and proud cultural traditions, including many writers, such as the Nobel-prize winner Selma Lagerlöf and Gustaf Fröding. Karlstad is the Province Capital of Värmland in Sweden and lies on the delta where the river Klarälven flows into lake Vänern, the third largest lake in Europe. There are about 95,000 inhabitants in Karlstad municipality and 140,000 in the Karlstad region.


The E18 road between Stockholm and Oslo and the E45/E6 road from Gothenburg both go through the city.

Sports, culture and activities

Sport is an important factor in Karlstad, and home to the elite ice-hockey team Färjestad, WRC Rally Sweden, Olympic medal winners in athletics and World Champion curling teams. Culturally, the city stages concerts with international artists, musical- and opera performances, and art exhibitions. Karlstad CCC, where the WCC is going to take place, is a state-of-the-art facility, beautifully situated on the banks of the Klarälven river. Congresses, conferences, exhibitions, concerts and theatre performances are arranged here all year round.

Karlstad has 250 km of cycle paths and cycle travel has increased by 30 percent in the last ten years. We are ranked as one of Sweden's best municipalities for cycling. In 2018, 2019 and 2020 Karlstad won the title Best bicycling-promoting medium-sized municipality in the benchmarking study ”Kommunvelometern” which is carried out by Cykelfrämjandet, the Swedish national cycling advocacy organisation.
